Great food, but don't expect on-time delivery
DESCRIPTION: The food is wonderful, the portions are ample and the prices are fair. Be sure to "eat-in" only - don't order the food for delivery. Delivery is too often very, very late. Calling the manager will only subject you to abuse from a manager who must be trying to drive away customers!

authentic vegetarian ethnic food
DESCRIPTION: Bloodroot is the most unique, and probably best, restaurant you've ever been to. Devoted to a feminist vegetarianism and vegetarian feminism, the restaurant is run collectively, and has no waitresses. You order with a woman at the desk, bring your slip up to the kitchen counter, and when your food is ready your name is called out. Although it sounds casual, Bloodroot is perfect for special occasions because of the exceptional care they take when preparing the food. The restaurant is primarily organic and many vegetables are locally grown. They follow a seasonal menu, so be sure to come at different times of the year to get a full range of dishes. The food is just so hearty and perfect and wonderful, even meat eating friends will love it. And they have a bookstore, cooking classes, and wonderful decor!

Disappointed
DESCRIPTION: I was really let down Saturday night when I dinned at India in Warren, RI. I've eaten Indian food before and have totally loved everything! All of my friends informed me that this restaurant was rated very high, five stars to be exact. ANYWAY both my friend and I agreed that the dishes we had, tasted like they had been sitting in a steam tray for two days, there was no flavor very dull and very over cooked, dead and it certainly wasn't an inexpensive night out.

Yummy In My Tummy!
DESCRIPTION: Ever woken up at noon after a hard night of partying and just wanted something healthy to fill your belly? Well, I have... and that's probably why I'm so madly in love with Daybreak Cafe! Food is incredible. Servers are down to earth. Ambiance is totally Arcata. Mmmm, just thinking about it makes me want some... too bad they're not open for dinner!

A very friendly little place in South Austin
DESCRIPTION: An essential stop on the tour of Austin's coffeehouses, the 503 is one of the friendliest. Despite being jammed into a miniature stripmall near 1st and Oltorf, it doesn't <I>feel</i> like it once you're inside - the atmosphere is bohemian without being pretentious or exclusive, and it's dark without being gloomy (most tables have individual lights). There are some large tables that are great for drawing or writing on. Unlike most Austin coffee spots, the 503 offers a "bottomless mug" for about the price of two ordinary mugs. A terrific benefit for those planning on doing long hours of work or study. There's plenty of room both indoors and out, and the regulars are friendly. The coffee itself is tasty. Nothing to write home about, but never disappointing. The prices are Austin-Standard, or just a little below.

THE Baltimore Coffee House
DESCRIPTION: When One World opens its doors in 94, I was a semi-regular, and spent many hours there throughout the spring of 1995. It changed ownership a few years back, and lost a little charm, but it's still great ambiance, and a great location.

DESCRIPTION: Epic Cafe is a throwback-right out of the 60s. There are no wait staff--items are ordered at the cash register and are listed on a board on the wall. The reasonably priced items that stood out were desserts, sandwiches, quiche, coffee, tea and cold drinks. The cafe is a local hangout where one could sit, read, work on a computer or just socialize. There are few places like it around.

EXCELLENT
DESCRIPTION: I thought this restaurant was excellent. I had the lentil loaf-type dish with red beet sauce, mashed potatoes with mushrooms, and spinach. I cleaned my plate. I wish I had ordered a second dish to go. I can't remember what my sister ordered but she thoroughly enjoyed it. The portions were slightly more than just right (I was stuffed!) and the "starter" green salad was almost too much--I couldn't finish all of it. Everything tasted fresh and not over-spiced. Our dining neighbor ordered a slice of dark cake (carob???) that looked absolutely sinful. I was not pleased with the taste of the bottled iced tea--"honest tea"; it seemed to be weak and mint-spiced. I was expecting fresh-brewed Earl Grey iced tea (possibly sun tea) in this type of establishment, but the water (with lemon slice) was very refreshing. My sister said the bathroom was clean. The clientele was a wonderful mix of people (and a protective, obedient dog). The stools at the counter (overlooking Valencia Street) had extremely small seats. I have a small build and found it hard to "perch" on them comfortably (a little more surface area wouldn't hurt). The service was good. Our food came to us extremely fast. I am eager to return to this restaurant and sample more wonderful dishes

Heavenly
DESCRIPTION: Standing in the strip-mall parking lot outside of the Bangkok Wok for the first time, I expected a dingy linoleum floor, bright fluorescent lights, a handful of tables, and a counter at the back of the store. But I wanted to try some Thai food, so we went in and I got the shock of my life. "Pleasantly surprised" would be the understatement of the century. The restaurant is quiet and intimate. The walls are covered in bamboo and pictures of Thailand. It is lit exclusively by white Christmas-style lights as well as a candle or lamp on each table. The decor includes traditional Thai dolls, puppets, and angels. There are fresh tropical flowers on the tables. Focal points include a fish tank full of coral (there's a small starfish that's fun to look for) and a rickshaw. As a vegetarian, I always worry that there will not be a large variety on the menu. Of course, Eastern cuisines generally offer more vegetarian options than Western cuisines, but I am often overwhelmed by the choices I have a Bangkok Wok. I can even choose dishes in the pork or chicken sections and request to have the tofu in place of the meat. The portions are generous; the food is very fresh (I wonder where they get such great produce in the middle of winter); and it's always delicious. The service is excellent. Unlike chain restaurants, the staff has a rather low turnover rate. The waitresses are always ready with a recommendation or willing to answer questions about something new. Water cups rarely go empty. If something is wrong with your meal, it is handled immediately and appropriately - with none of the attitude you can encounter in other restaurants. Bangkok Wok has become one of my favorite restaurants. Not only do I enjoy going there regularly, but I like to take visiting family and friends there for a treat. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in trying something a little different. Oh - and I highly recommend reservations for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. They're rather busy then.
