DESCRIPTION: I always think this place would be like going to your aunt's house for food if (i) your aunt was Russian and (ii) an excellent cook. The food is familiar yet a little different, and always excellent.

Cozy Katia s features a Californified version of traditional Soviet fare
DESCRIPTION: Cozy Katia s features a lovingly-crafted lighter, Californified version of traditional Soviet fare. Large windows flank the spartan dining room, lending the tiny room an expansive feel. Live music adds either a romantic (classical guitar) or upbeat (accordion) ambience, inspiring motherly owner Katia Troosh to waltz between tables. A basket of light, chewy rye bread (from Bakers of Paris in the Sunset) greets diners. Start with an assortment of zakuski ("little bites") the beet-red vinaigrette ($4) "salad" lacks greens, but nicely blends diced potatoes, carrots, celery, pickles and beets in a light bath of olive oil. Piroshki ($2.50), fluffy pastries stuffed with beef, cabbage or mushrooms, compliment the pickled dishes and the house special, blini ($16 for 2), four golden buttered crep s accompanied by a plate of Norwegian smoked salmon, salty salmon caviar and pickled herring. The seasonal house-made jams ($2.50) and multi-layered chocolate walnut meringue torte ($4.50) are highlights.

Read War and Peace before entrees arrive
DESCRIPTION: Went here on the assumption they might have decent slavic food. Order appetizers, herring and caviar spread, and piroshkis. Later are told they are out of piroshkis (?), and they bring us two orders of herring only instead. The herring is ok, and decent dill potatoes are supplied. Wait an hour for entrees (and this is at 5:30pm on a Sunday). Entrees arrive after harassing waiter. Cabbage rolls are half raw and cold, "authentic" chicken kiev looks like an artillery shell from Swanson's, Beef Stroganoff is passable but by this point we have lost our collective appetite and want to leave. The music and vodka were good, I suppose. Don't go here for the food. Bonus points: Cook is seen in mens room in full kitchen outfit, does not wash hands. Mmmmm hand rolled dumplings.
