A Good Selection of Vegetarian Choices
DESCRIPTION: Thursday dinner out is becoming something of a tradition for us. To avoid having it become a rut we've been trying out new places each week; La Indita is the latest. Located on 4th Ave in the shopping area, it's easy to find and pretty easy to find nearby parking (just park a block or two off 4th). After being seated in a booth with a menu we were asked about our drink of choice for the evening. Not having any time to see what they had, we instinctively said: iced tea. This turned out to be a mistake, since the tea was fruit flavored. Sorry, but tea should taste like tea, not fruit. We were happy to see that the menu had quite a number of items that were either vegetarian (meatless, not vegan), or that could be prepared vegetarian. One of us settled on the green corn tamales (they were in season), the other a combination plate of mushroom enchiladas, spinach enchiladas, and a potato taco. While we waited for dinner we munched on the bowl of chips (warm) and salsa verde. Both were good, and it is entirely possible that both were made on site. Dinner arrived and it was hot! Not spicy hot, but surface of the sun hot. And over all it was pretty good, although there were a few rough spots. The side of spanish rice was unexceptional: white rice with a few peas and carrots, almost no spices, and hence, no flavor. The refried beans were ordinary, nothing that you won't get at any other Mexican restaurant. These were the first green corn tamales we've had and they were quite good. Light in texture and flavor and none to filling, these make for a tasty dinner. It is easy to see why some people become passionate about green corn tamales. The mushroom enchiladas were very good, lots of grilled or sauteed mushrooms filling the enchilada wrapper. The spinach enchiladas also had generous portions of spinach stuffed inside. Interestingly, these were not covered in the usual enchilada sauce, it was more of a mild cream sauce. The potato taco, was just that cubes of potatoes in a crisp taco shell with the normal sides. This turns out to be better that it sounds; we might even try making these at home sometime.

Best Mexican Food Around
DESCRIPTION: I ordered the Indian Taco which is indian fry bread topped with beans, spicy red chile, lettuce, cheese and tomato sauce. The red chile was perfect the dish was hot; you could tell it was freshly made. I ordered Horchata, a Mexican rice drink, perfect when eating spicy Mexican food! It quenches your thirst and is made fresh at La Indita. Rachel was my waitress. She was the most kind waitress and really knew how to relate to customers. She always knew when she was needed and she took very good care of us. The style this restraunt had was terrific. The mural on the left side of the wall, depicting the owner Maria Garcia's home village in Mexico, is striking. The level of detail is amazing the detail that was put into it. Maria Garcia, the owner, is the mother of six. Many of the recepies on the menu are old, traditional mexican dishes, but Maria, raising 6 kids, had to save money, so she changed the ingredients a bit and made them better. Her customers are completley satisfied when leaving La Indita, just like her kids must've been growing up.

Tasty!!!
DESCRIPTION: I ate the tacos and the Mexican omelette. They were very delicious. I eat there every chance I have. The service was good. It's a very clean restaurant and it's not so very crowded that you can't hear the people at your table talking. There is no other restaurant like this one.

Old Road House
DESCRIPTION: I went to Henry's restaurant, Old Road House, at Mescalero with Dave Rimple (aka The Indian), oh, I guess that was in 1999. It was alright, I had the enchiladas. I'd never had one that wasn't rolled up before. It was a little disconcerting...It was pretty good though. I hear it is a standard way of making enchilada in New Mexico. Hey Henry! How 'bout you try making them the way we do, take a tortilla, fill it up with cheese, chicken, steak, whatever you like, smothering them with sauce, drizzling a bit more cheese on top, and baking them at 350? Doesn't take any longer, it might be more time efficient, since you can toss a few pans in at a time, then microwave them at will. Love ya! Luz Rimple, ex wife of Dave Rimple '68 -'79. Very, very good.
DESCRIPTION: Went to the Old Road House with my mom and one of her co-workers. I didn't try any of the chile, but my mom and her co-worker did; both found the salsa excellent, though it did look a bit watery; perhaps this is part of it's charm, since it's obviously a house recipe. The guacamole was good, except I found it a bit spicy (my mom said this was from the onions; I don't really think so, though). The enchiladas were excellent; I had a chicken sour cream enchilada, no beans or chile. It was fantastic, I enjoyed it immensely. The house is very beautiful, and the view from the back room is great. There is also a museum underneath the restaurant itself, but I didn't get a chance to look at it. I found it to be a very pleasant dining experience, though, and fully recommend it to all.

Comfort NM food
DESCRIPTION: I have eaten at Old Road for my entire life! My aunt lives less than a mile down the road, and it is one of my favorite past times. The salsa is my favorite, and the occasion to spot a turkey. Even though I don't live in Mescalero anymore, Old Road is the first place I like to visit.

Very, Very Excellent Food
DESCRIPTION: I have always been eating at Old Road in Mescalero, N.M. ever since I was a little girl. The food is excellent; I always enjoy the taco plate with beans and rice. If you are in the mood for hamburgers, they serve up some good burgers and fries. The next time you are in town stop by and try it out. Also stop by the new Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino.

Don't Miss It!
DESCRIPTION: What a treat! We were told this was a "don't miss," and we toasted the person who recommended it to us with the restaurant's signature prickly pear lemonade. We ate our way through New Mexico, always on the lookout for green chile stew. Although we don't lack for wonderful Mexican food in California, green chile stew, not to mention sopaipillas, are unique to New Mexico. Definitely one of the high points of our trip.

Wonderful
DESCRIPTION: Delightful setting in a beautiful part of Northern New Mexico. Classic New Mexican food done well and let's be clear on this--it's not "Mexican" food, the dishes may sound the same but this is a regional cuisine. My wife and I have visited this area and this restaurant for years and it's always worth the trip. Knockout desserts, such as the pumpkin flan that we had there last November.

Good exemplar of local food
DESCRIPTION: This is the place if you want to sample the type of cooking which has long been loved in the low country. Try the Gullah rice, cooked with shrimp, sausage, chicken and herbs. Or a special like Frogmore stew -- shrimp, sausage, corn-on-the-cob and potatoes. Unpretentious atmosphere, always friendly service and sometimes live music.

Great Navajo dishes
DESCRIPTION: In the heart of the Navajo Reservation, Don't miss the chance to try traditional Navajo Mutton Stew (wisely made with lamb and no chilli peppers) and Navajo Fry Bread. Remarkable breakfast-- a side of ham & Fry Bread (not on the breakfast menu, but will make it if ordered) Check out the Navajo art decorating the walls, most of which is for sale.

Best burgers in town!!
DESCRIPTION: The building this place is in is very old and somewhat weather beaten, but the food is great. If you are looking for a burger and fries, that have not been cooked in fish greese, this is the place. Great burgers with all the trimmings and home made french fries.
