1/2 lb Liver 225 grams 1/2 lb Beef, minced 225 grams 2 md Onions 6 oz Oatmeal, medium 175 grams 6 oz Suet shredded; 175 grams 1 t Salt 1 pn Pepper 1 pn Nutmeg grated 1/3 c Water 50 ml approx. in which liver had been boiled 1 pn Cayenne pepper "Haggis, "The great Chieftain of the pudding' race", as Robert Burns, described it, is indeed a toothsome morsel and it is a great pity that many English people look upon it as more a Scottish joke than a good Scottish dish. However since Haggis is made from the stomach, lungs and other internals of a sheep it is a rather gruesome sight during certain stages of its cooking, as anyone who has witnessed the process will agree. The lung must be first be heating in a pan of hot water with the trachea hanging over the side to allow any blood and froth to escape and the stomach bag must be cleaned and scraped very thoroughly before it is used. I must say from experience that it takes needs a fairly robust stomach to first prepare and then eat it. If you can buy prepared haggis I do strongly recommend you to try it. All you need to do is slice it and fry it in a lightly greased frying pan. If you cannot buy ready made haggis, then the following is tasty substitute.." Boil the liver for five minutes. Drain and put aside to cool. Toast the oatmeal in a dry frying pan or in the oven until it begins to turn a pale brown. Peel and mince the onions and the liver. Mix all the ingredients with the seasoning and stir in some of the water in which the liver has been boiled. The mixture should be thoroughly moist but not wet. Have ready a greased basin large enough to give the mixture room to swell. Cover with greaseproof paper and a cloth and boil or steam for three hours. The traditional way to serve haggis is with mashed potatoes and turnips "tatties and neeps", as they are called in Scotland and to give the meal a truly Scottish flavour you should serve a glass of whiskey along with it. I like to let the mock haggis go cold and then slice it and heat it through in a frying pan (without fat) until golden brown on both sides. This way it is very good with poached eggs and even with chips. Note: if your mince looks to be on the fatty side, then cut down the quantity of suet to 4 oz (100grams). DESCRIPTION: Poor cut of beef for Steak Diane, very thin and over cooked. Vegetables over cooked, didn't receive red cabbage with German platter, told it cost extra but on menu says it comes with the meal. Very disappointing, I plan to never come again.

Kreis' Restaurant Attitude
DESCRIPTION: I was at Kreis's Rst. on New Year's Eve (1/31/2001). I had heard many good reports on how great their prime rib was. However, I was greatly dissapointed in my Prime Rib. First of all, I realize that it was New Years Eve and they were very busy, but my Prime Rib came just about uncooked. I was with a large group and only 2 of us ordered the Prime Rib and both experienced the same problem. In addition, my meat was so tough that I could barely cut it. I would have normally sent it back, but since I was in a large group and we were going to a party afterwards, I decided to try to eat it. I managed to only cut and eat about 5 pieces when all of the other people were done with their meal. I decided to just get a doggy bag and take it home with me. Two days later, I cooked the meat in my oven for 50 more minutes and it was now edible (still with lots of pink). I called Kreis' Resturant and complained about my meal and was told that one of their broilers went out and that they were running at about 55% of their capacity. If they would have told me that they could not cook the Prime Rib, I would have ordered something else. But no one said a thing. The person talking to me said that the owner would call me and discuss the situation with me. Several days went by and no call. I called back several more times and was told each and everytime that he would call me. Here it is January 25th and still I have not heard one word from him. I have to assume that he didn't care what kind of food he was putting out that evening and all he was interested in was in getting my money. I can safely say that with that kind of attitude, I would have a hard time to recommend Kreis' Restaurant to anyone. In fact, I belong to another group of friends who had suggested going out the Kreis's Restaurant for an outing of our group. I told them of my experience and we decided to go to Bartilino's instead. By the way, the service and food at Bartilino's was exceptional.

Kreis' Prime Rib
DESCRIPTION: I must say that Kreis' prime rib is the BEST! I can't believe anyone could ever complain about it. Prime rib is supposed to be almost raw. We went there for my wife and my first Christmas gift meal and not only was their prime rib good, but so was their choice of potato which was a twice baked. Not just anyone does that. The mater dei' service was very good too. It wasn't cheap, but you got a LOT for your money. It's the best place to go to celebrate something very important. We will be going there tomorrow for our first anniversary and have a candlelight dinner. I can hardly wait!

DESCRIPTION: Living in California, I always look forward to going back to St. Louis to visit friends and eat at Kreis Restaurant. For over 30 years, this restaurant has never disappointed. I've had many wonderful meals over the years and recommend it to anyone looking for a special place and fantastic food. The service matches the food.

DESCRIPTION: Kreis is by far one of the best resturants in the St. Louis area. The atmosphere, food, and service are excellent, yet the resturant maintains an affordable price level. Whether entertaining friends or out of town business clients I can count on the wide variety of menu offerings to please any pallete. From their award winning Prime Rib (their Specialty) to their Grilled Vegitarian Platter, they have something for everyone. Their german menu items also help to accentuate the theme of the resturant and will please any foreign guest. I would recommend this resturant to anyone wanting to have a great meal in a great atmosphere, at a great price.
