DESCRIPTION: I've been eating here for well over fifteen years - unbeatable, bold tastes. After having tried so many other bland Asian Restaurants around the country, there is only one place for me - The Southeast Asian in Lowell. I can't recommend this place enough. Service is slow when busy, but this isn't fast food. Be patient. If this food doesn't hook you for life, you've got a screw loose.

Excellent Food, Good Company
DESCRIPTION: This restaurant has a very large selection of Thai and Asian food. We often join our friends here when we come to town and visit. Usually we bring about 10 people and have a sumptuous meal. The more people you bring, the more delicious dishes you get to try. They have some of the best Asian food in the area. I would highly recommend stopping by for lunch or dinner... I know I will every chance I get :-)

Extensive, Wonderful Menu
DESCRIPTION: We've made this place a regular habit for several years and have told numerous friends about it. The fish dumpling appetizers are special and great for youngsters as well. Great Cambodian food
DESCRIPTION: This is in a storefront that my dad's generation would have called a joint! However, the food is excellent and very authentic. We have been to Cambodia and this compares well. The prices are very very reasonable and the seafood dishes especially good. Try the fish, tomato and pineapple soup. Amazing. It is located right near Highways 101 and 880. The decor consists of nondescript kitchen tables and posters of Angkor Wat. Friendly family staff.

Not so good for this vegetarian
DESCRIPTION: Everyone I know swears by Apsara, but to me it seems very greasy and everything tastes like fish sauce. I don't think all of their meatless dishes are really vegetarian, but if you like the faint taste of fish or meat on your vegetables go right ahead. The condensed milk in the thai iced tea tastes metallic. If you want something spicy you must ask. Pleasant staff and atmosphere, but better for the carnivorous. The Thai options are spiced quite differently than how Thai is usually (not a plus for me).

A Pittsburgh Must
DESCRIPTION: Make sure to start your meal with a cup of Lemongrass Soup! Tom Yum with fresh cilantro and tomatoes - Yum yum. My favorite dish is the Red Curry Noodle, by far the best curry I've had in the Eastern US. Great dining experience, with excellent service.

I LOVE the food at Carambola!
DESCRIPTION: I am working my way through the entire menu and haven't found one that I don't like. The spring rolls are an absolute must. My favorite dish so far is the shrimp curry, however the catfish tonle sap is excellent too. The atmosphere was nice but I haven't been during their peak times. I highly recommend the food!

Tasty Thai on the West Side
DESCRIPTION: We ate at Phnom Penh one Tuesday night after getting many good recommendations about the place from friends. They have a varied selection Thai food with many vegetarian choices available. Their appetizers are small, but inexpensive. Their main courses are big enough for at least one meal (I brought half of mine home, one of my friends ate all of his there) and they have some interesting deserts, too. I started with a vegetarian spring roll, which came with some tasty dipping sauce. One of my companions had skewered chicken, which came with a peanutty paste on the side. We both had medium Pad Thai, and let me warn you: there is a big difference between the normal and the medium pad thai. The medium was almost too hot for me, and I'm a lover of spicy foods, so that's saying something. I can't imaging how hot the next two levels of spiciness are. Phnom Penh has a few exotic drinks available, made from fruits that we'd never heard of before but were delicious. The menu is long and detailed, so if you're wondering what something is, you won't need to ask the waitress to find out. Our only caution is that refills on soda are not free, so make sure you ask for some water, too, especially if you're going to be having something that's on the spicy side.

DESCRIPTION: If you are ever looking for a fresh, tasty egg roll, look no further. Nime Chow is a vegie roll up made with rice paper, rice noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro, and shrimp (can be made without seafood). It isn't fried or anything, it's all fresh and server with the best peanut sauce!

Polish Gourmand Pope John Paul II Pigged Out Here
DESCRIPTION: Ever since Polish gourmand Pope John Paul II pigged out here in 1987, this authentic Cambodian abode has been San Francisco s best-known Asian wild card. The food (like Thai but fruitier) and presentation (gilded antique everything) reek of royalty, but the setting screams suburban basement. The sunken pillow-seating section is the best bet for groups of six or more. Anything accented with five spices (galanga, lemongrass, turmeric, lime and garlic) is worth trying. The fragrant duck curry ($11.95), skinless shreds of meat, thick-cut ruffled potatoes and baby carrots simmered in a delicate lemongrass, garlic, shallot, ginger, dried red chili, cream and viscous jus d orange gravy is indeed royal. For dessert, dare to sample the audacious jackfruit custard ($3) you might be surprised. The pumpkin custard, floated on a puddle of condensed milk (with a texture like babyfood pablum), was a loser. Fruity and chocolate mousses are a safer bet.

Family Like Service, Royal Food
DESCRIPTION: Whenever I want to treat myself to something special, I visit Angkor Wat. While their ambiance won't be your cup of tea if you arrived in a Jaguar, it's lovely, cosy and intimate in a more authentic way - most good eateries in Southern Asia are not pretentious, counting instead on good food to bring the customers in. The service is wonderfully personal - you'll get advice on dishes, and a special smile reserved for regulars. Water arrives cold, dishes piping hot. In addition to delectable, juicy dishes (try stuffed mushroom appetizer, also available in a vegetarian version!), Angkor Wat is the home of the most amazing Iced Coffee drink in the Bay Area. If you are a coffeephile, you won't be able to leave without at least two of the tall, big glasses of strong, flavorful coffee with top quality, heavy cream - not for the faint of heart, literally! I usually down three. The traditional dancing shows feature lovely local dancers who seem to be high quality enthusiasts more than the professional dancers - excellent, but without the artificial feeling to it. You can almost imagine yourself transported to a Cambodian street as you leave the place. Oh yes -- they are very proud about the pope's visit. He ordered seconds, and you will too.

Probably the worst Chinese dining experience ever!
DESCRIPTION: Probably the worst Chinese dining experience ever! The crab legs we ordered came with almost no meat, and without utensils and forks. We complained several times to our waiter but no actions were taken to correct the problem. We then spoke with the manager (and owner) who told us that "Americans don't know how to eat crab.." and that we had no reasons to complain. This was the last straw! We left the place upset and won't ever come back.

DESCRIPTION: This place use to be a diamond in this area and then it was sold again! The service is not very friendly. It seems everytime I go in there the are not helpful or even polite. Once I had a problem with some brownies I got from there and I called and talked to the manager she said "If you cooked it at home you could have had a hair in it also"! I was told these things happen and you can not control it. I called to report her to the owner only to find out that she was the owner's mother! So I just choose not to shop there!
