Best Breakfast
DESCRIPTION: This is a great place for Saturday morning breakfast. Don't expect white table cloths and a decked out wait staff. This place has an atmosphere of its own. The food is really good. We have made it part of our weekend ritual. Prices are cheap, too.

DESCRIPTION: Old Venice is one of the best restaurants on the historic Oxford Square. The food is amazing -- everything on the menu is so good, you will have a very hard time trying to decide on just one thing. The bar (The Burgandy Room) is by far the best bar in Oxford. I recommend a Sex on the Square to drink while overlooking the Oxford Square on the BR's balcony.

Not the best
DESCRIPTION: This is not the best place to eat, drink or be merry on the Square. The service here is the absolute worst in town. Last item I was there the waiter offered me bread from the table next to me as they were getting up to leave. The Burgundy is a fun place to hang out if you're underage and want to stand shoulder to shoulder and take in more second hand smoke than in any other bar in town.

OLD VENICE PIZZA COMPANY
DESCRIPTION: My very favorite pizza...period, whether in Oxford, Starkville, or Jackson. I like their salads, too. And their lasagna? Well, I bet you most of you can't "eat the whole thing!" And the employees are great!

DESCRIPTION: I came to eat here while visiting a friend, the food was excellent but the service was terrible. After bringing us our food the next time we saw our waiter was when he brought us our bill, even then we had to flag him down for it. We had one refill of our drinks but that was because we flagged down a waitress. I'd go back just because the food was very good.

THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD!!!!
DESCRIPTION: This is simply one of the best restaurants I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. The service is really great and so are the employees. You gotta try the lasagna, it'll make you kiss the cute waitress.

Not A Rave
DESCRIPTION: Old Venice used to be THE place to go on the Square. Now it has become the same mediocre dining experience as everything else in the Town and Gown game. The service is horrible and the alfredo sauce tastes like wallpaper paste. Those that rave about the lasagna must love ricotta cheese because it overpowers the meat sauce as it oozes from the sides of the overcooked pasta. I used to love this restaurant but the standards seemed to have slipped.

Muddy Water Grill
DESCRIPTION: This is a cute little restaurant located about 2 miles from Ole Miss in Oxford, MS. They have excellent catfish and seafood dishes at reasonable prices. I highly recommend the blackened or fried catfish. They have really good-looking servers too!! Recently has gone through ownership change, seems to have improved the overall atmosphere and food selection.

City Grocery remains excellent
DESCRIPTION: Shrimp & grits remain a top item, but many of the fish entrees are excellent as well. Bread pudding approaches the Northeast versions and matches New Orleans versions. The staff is defintely not rude, but the customer must remember that Oxford is a town of few top quality establishments and that seating demands in this popular retirement and university sports town requires the customer to appreciate the efforts to serve many in limited seating capacity in the town as a whole, particularly in the space restricted old/historic areas (i.e. City Grocery)where new construction and space expansion is not possible.

Good food, sometimes exceptional
DESCRIPTION: City Grocery seldom disappoints, but it falls short when it overreaches. Its bests are the things it does with farm-raised game like venison, plus lamb, and most seafoods. Pork is not exceptional; don't order their beef because it invariably is overcooked. The salads and appetizers are creatively superb. The desserts are rich; it needs an always avalable selection of sorbets for tose who want dolce without huge quanties. The coffee is fine. The wine list is reasonably good and rather pricey. But it''s the best on The Sqaure, hands down. No other restauant comes close. What City Grocery needs most is competition.

DESCRIPTION: <What City Grocery needs most is competition> Amen! It's too bad one man owns most of the restaurants there. I lived in Oxford for three years. Every place is overrated. Service rarely is competent at Central Grocery. I've given that place many chances. Unfortunately, there aren't better places. I believe the owner also runs Ajax. I guess the biased, customer (above) is right. Ajax is downright terrible. While I love Oxford and Ole Miss, their restaurants could use a facelift - like that of Tad Smith Coliseum.

Best food in the state
DESCRIPTION: This is THE place for fine dining in Mississippi. They've been open since I was in college (18 years ago). I went there when I graduated and have been a fan ever since. The chefs stay on the cutting edge of what's happening on the food scene. The fish is as fresh as any you will find. They have also won many Wine Spectator awards for their wine list. Excellent and attentive service.
