Avalon, the pairing of art and cuisine
DESCRIPTION: Another recent addition to the Louisville dining landscape, this Bardstown Road American Bistro won us over. Chef Nathan Carlson has certainly lived up to what this bistro boasts, "Our passion is creating exceptional cuisine". The menu is not overwhelming for the dining patron, which is probably why the food at Avalon is superb. Avalon occupies the old Bobby J s Restaurant and Club, however, a total architectural transformation occurred on the interior. The walls are adorned with dazzling artwork, murals, and sculptures. In fact, make it a point to wander through the restaurant and check out the collection. The newly transformed atmosphere at Avalon is upscale causal ..that means you don t need the tie (as if you need a tie to dine in Louisville anyway). Seating is well designed and thankfully not over-crowded, enhancing an intimate dinning experience. Let s not forget about what Chef Carlson is creating in his kitchen. The appetizers are exuberant and delectable. Totally unique, savory, and daring are the fried risotto and gouda "spheres" with smoked tomato vinaigrette and the rock shrimp stuffed hush puppy with mushrooms and mayonnaise. Regardless of your choice---they re all first rate. Creativity hallmarks the entrees, which are all wonderfully prepared. Olive marinated lamb loin, preserved lemon and chili oil--- now that s what we're talking about, 'flair!' Additionally, several pasta, seafood, and meat entrees and sandwiches are available. The soft-shell crab sandwich with avocado, remoulade and shoestring potato now there s a sandwich to satisfy any kid from Baltimore. The wine list boasts over 40 wines 'by-the-glass' which, is unheard of at most restaurants. The service is strong without being overbearing. For a bit of artistic culture, intimate dining, and outstanding cuisine check out one of Bardstown Roads newest kid on the block, Avalon. Very Disappointed!
DESCRIPTION: We were treated very badly. We had 4 giftcards and the manager was telling us that 2 of them had a zero balance. She was very rude! She made us feel like we were stupid. When we told our aunt (she gave them to us as a Christmas present) she was upset and she called the manager herself. The manager told her that we did not know what we were doing or know what we had! We are not children and we could not help it if somewhere down the line someone messed something up. That is now twenty dollars we are out of. We have been customers for years. This was such a horrible experience that we never care if we walk into another Hometown restaurant again! [submitted 07 Feb 2004]

Best Bar-B-Q'd Mutton on Earth
DESCRIPTION: An original secret "black" sauce from a fifth generation family tradition creates barbequed meats that are one-of-kind delicious. Various meats are available but the specialty is mutton. In a city that touts an "International Bar-B-Q Festival", you have to be good to get noticed. This is the best. It's all about the "Q" here, nothing else matters.

It's the best.
DESCRIPTION: There are other barbecue restaurants in town but Old Hickory is the best. I grew up there and was nearly an adult before I realized "barbecue" and "mutton" were not always the same thing! I live in England now, but every year make at least one trip back home and always have at least one meal there.

Best in the BBQ Capital of the World
DESCRIPTION: While not the most famous restaurant in town, Old Hickory is the best. As a native of the town, I have grown up eating at all of the different restaurants and now exclusively go to Old Hickory. The mutton and burgoo alone are worth the 3 hour drive home from college.

Best Barbecue in the WORLD!
DESCRIPTION: Okay, okay, I'm another Owensboro native writing to plug the best barbecue anywhere. I now live in Texas, and import it everytime I go home. My parents now live in Louisville, but it's worth the two hour drive to stock up! While my brother and dad would disagree, the chopped mutton is the BEST! (They prefer the sliced.) Been going there for almost 50 years since it was in the cinderblock place across the street. I loved the old place, the new one is, well, new. You hear a lot more about The Moonlight... but the locals all eat at Old Hickory!

Old Hickory is second to none!
DESCRIPTION: I really hated giving a less than perfect score for "service" and "ambiance" regarding Old Hickory because this is a place that makes you feel like you can prop your feet up and make yourself at home. The hard working employee's are not perfect and the restaurant isn't exactly a place to propose marriage in candle lights and mandolins softly playing in the background. But that's exactly why Old Hickory is the best place to eat...down home folks serving up the best BBQ in Owensboro and making you feel like you are part of their family.
