This Blog May Be Forced Offline…

Do you use Verizon, AT&T, Time Warner, or Comcast for your Internet access?  If so, you may want to learn about some legislation the big phone and cable companies are pushing.  It’s a legislation that will get rid of Net Neutrality.  In other words, AT&T, Time Warner, etc… will begin charging websites for access to their networks.  The amount of fees paid by those websites will dictate how fast the site loads – or if it loads at all.

Not sure what all this is about?  Go read this FAQ… I’ll wait.

More on Earnings and Case Study

I’ve been doing some thinking, and I figure it’s time to branch out and test the waters of other advertising systems out there. Therefore, I’ve replaced the AdSense wide skyscraper on my sidebar with a Bidvertiser skyscraper. Bidvertiser is a bid-based system where advertisers bid to be listed on your website. Obviously a lot of advertisers have default bids for any and all websites, as I just checked my bids, and – after having only been a member for a little under an hour – I had a couple hundred ads to approve/disapprove. Originally, I had set it to auto-approve all ads. I’m changing that, due to ad targetting issues. I don’t think you guys need to see ads about house painting. I’ll be testing other ad systems on my other blogs, as time goes by. I’ll let you know how well each work.

CASE STUDY…

Google Alternate Ad Not Working?

I’ve been doing some editing of the ad units on this blog, and am attempting to put my BlogAds strip in place of my AdSense skyscraper on the sidebar, instead of displaying PSAs.  So, I did what anyone would have done, and inserted the appropriate URL in the google_alternate_ad_url property.

It appears, however, that this is not working.  The ad unit does not display the alternate url, however.  The unit simply displaying nothing – a transparent area.

AdSense Policies Prohibit ALL Encouragement

I mentioned, recently, that Google AdSense Support had sent me a compliance warning.  The reason was wording of a specific paragraph that encouraged users to click on a specific advertisement.  The ad on which I encouraged clicks was a BlogAds advertisement, and was not affiliated with Google’s AdSense in any way.

When I responded to the compliance notice, letting them know I fixed the issue, I asked if it was permissible to single out and mention clicking on specific ads that were not a part of Google’s AdSense program.  Google responded:

Google AdSense doing Compliancy Checks

Hey, folks.  It appears that the AdSense team is doing random compliancy checks.  I received an e-mail from them, earlier today:

AdSense Top Channels Now Only Shows Top Channels

It appears that Google finally got around to making it easier to understand the reporting overview.

Previously, when one looked at the overview screen, one was presented with the totals for each type of product (AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search, or Referrals), and a link to “Channels”. Clicking on the “Channels” link revealed all channels, in no particular order, with no way to sort the list.

Now, AdSense reporting overview shows total information for each product, along with a “Top channels” link. Clicking the “Top channels” link, reveals only those channels which have had activity within the specified time frame, making it much easier to see – at a glance – which ad units are performing well, and which are not performing at all.

Leveraging AdSense and Single Page Sites

In an attempt to play with my knowledge of AdSense, Chitika, and SEO, I am creating a series of single page sites.  Essentially, information sites, design to provide basic information and provide links to purchase products, online.

Primarily, I will be using AdSense and Chitika.  If one does not perform well, it will be removed and replaced.  As you can see, I am also using Amazon.com.  I don’t know how well my amazon link will do… we’ll see.

Blogger Kills Child, Spawns Discussion

I’m sure the majority of you have heard about the blogger who killed a 10 year old girl in Oklahoma, last week.  After a little bit of work (and thanks to Blog Herald), I discovered a link to his blog, and some of the posts.  In particular a post – where he makes a comment about wanting to kill people – sticks out in my mind.  In this post, the majority of comments about the situation are being left.

Needless to say, a lot of anonymous people are leaving comments.  Contrary to the way these events usually play out, there is actually quite a bit of discussion going, including a comment by a guy who uses the name Nihilator:

AdSense Mediapartners Crawler/Bot Adding to Google Index

JenSense has a post with some pretty conclusive evidence that the Mediapartners bot (also known as the AdSense Bot) has been indexing the pages it has crawled into the main Google search index.

According to the Google AdSense Terms of Service:

Page Rank Explained

Ian Rogers has written a very nice paper, explaining Google’s page rank system.  He includes the formulas, as well as real-world examples, explaining how things break down.  Someone who read over this document several times, and spent a good while working it out on paper, could probably come up with an excellent – and “legal” – method to dramatically increase their page rank.

…and within a month Google would figure it out and compensate…
